What is Low Level Laser Therapy?

Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is also known as Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT). It is a completely painless treatment which improves tissue repair and reduces pain and inflammation wherever the beam is applied. Laser treatments are usually a course of treatments and can be used as a short term option to speed up healing in acute injuries, or can be safely used long term for chronic conditions and pain relief. The number of treatments needed will vary depending on the condition or injury.

What conditions can be treated?

LLLT can be used to speed up healing in wounds and muscle injuries. It provides excellent pain relief for chronic long term conditions. It can also be used as a pre and post operative treatment package to aid speedy healing after surgery.

Some examples are:

Skin: burns & scalds, abrasions & grazes, bruises & haematomas, diabetic ulcers.

Muscle & Bone (MSK) injuries: cartilage tears, tendonitis, muscle strains, plantar fasciitis, bone breaks & fractures.

Pain Relief: phantom limb pain, neck pain, back pain, migraine, prosthetic pressure sores,

arthritis pain, tension headaches, fibromyalgia.

What happens in an appointment?

During your first appointment the therapist will take some admin information, ask about your medical history in general, and specifically about the injury or condition that requires treatment. The best treatment plan for your condition will be explained.

Treatment is carried out in direct contact with the skin and you may have to remove some articles of clothing. Please wear brief style underwear (not french knickers or boxers). If you are having treatment on your face do not wear makeup or face powder.

You will be given special glasses to wear during the treatment, It is highly recomended that you bring someone with you to your first appointment to drive you home.
